International Calendar 2023
Since 1988, the International Calendar has celebrated the peoples and countries served by Peace Corps—even during the past two+ years of suspended Peace Corps activity due to COVID-19.
But now Peace Corps is back in service, with volunteers stepping forward to promote world peace and friendship through service: 2022 saw the first Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) since the COVID suspension leave for training and service, retracing the steps of thousands of volunteers before them. As 2023 begins, even more countries are welcoming PCVs back again.
By highlighting the rich diversity of the world, the International Calendar is the cornerstone of the “Third Goal” efforts of the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Wisconsin-Madison: to help Americans understand the peoples and cultures of other countries.
International Calendar researchers consult solar, lunar, and astronomical calendars to determine the dates of important events each year. From religious high holy days to important civic dates to local market days, the International Calendar is rich in information and cultural diversity. You’ll also find demographic information for each featured country, along with a suggested recipe and music, film, and book titles to explore. For lists of current and past suggestions, click on the "Cultural Resources" button or check out our "Educator Resources."
In addition to celebrating world cultures, the calendar supports development projects worldwide through our donations program—from a community library in Zimbabwe to a bakery project in Haiti to a library resource center in Armenia. Please join us in supporting these good works and in celebrating the return of Peace Corps
